Minerals: Tungsten mine for Devon

The first new metal mine in Britain for 40 years will open next year in Devon following the approval of £130 million of investment. The Hemerdon tungsten and tin mine, on the edge of Dartmoor, will be the third- or fourth-biggest tungsten mine in the world, Dr Robin Sharl from Camborne School of Mines told the BBC.

Tungsten sells for £25,000 a tonne, making it extremely valuable. It has a variety of industrial uses, especially for hardening metal alloys.
