Prime minister Rishi Sunak has stopped the passage of a vital piece of legislation designed to bolster the independence of the UK, the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill.

The move was first flagged in a promise to US president Joe Biden – as if the US has any business with Britain’s treaties with the EU.

The Protocol effectively allows the EU to treat part of the United Kingdom as if it were in the EU single market rather than the one voters had said they wanted, the UK single market. And it has created serious problems ever since. The bill had been set to allow Britain – if necessary – to unilaterally override the Protocol.
